Mary Miller RN, MN, a Child Labor/Teen Worker Supervisor for Washington State Department of Labor and Industries; Employment Standards Program, presented "Understanding the Proposed Changes to the Agricultural Child Labor Regulations" on Thursday, October 13, 2011. Upon completion of the webinar, participants will:

  1. Understand the proposed changes to the Agricultural Child Labor Regulations
  2. Describe the differences coverage between agricultural and the non-agricultural regulations
  3. Identify gaps in coverage for protections for groups of children not included by the proposed changes
  4. Identify mechanism for providing feedback on proposed regulations to the US Dept. of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division

Mary Miller is the Child Labor Specialist for the Dept of Labor and Industries and works extensively on child labor regulations, policies and strategies to prevent occupational injuries to young workers. She is involved in extensive outreach and education to a range of groups including employers – agricultural and non-agricultural, worker organizations, school administrators and teachers, teens, healthcare providers and public health professionals She has worked on a number of educational projects with the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety to develop training materials for supervisors of adolescent farmworkers. She has published a number of articles about injuries to youth and strategies for protecting them. She has been a member of the Childhood Agriculture Safety Network for the past 5 years and is the co-chair of the Young Worker Safety and Health Network, a national advocacy group. She is an active member of the American Public Health Association and was awarded the Occupational Health and Safety section’s Alice Hamilton lifetime achievement award in 2000.
